Love for New York

Walking out of the JFK airport in New York at 7:00pm on a Friday night into a sea a traffic feels like home for me. Within five minutes of being in New York I am picking up bits and pieces of colorful conversations, every once and a while in a different language. The diversity is one thing that draws me in, in Missouri I do not hear another language outside of English spoken unless it is in my Spanish class. I am usually the only black student in a class or always seem to notice I do not quite fit in. When I am in New York I blend in, I feel completely normal and just in the right place. Many people see New York as a crazy fast paced opportunity to make their dreams come true but to me New York is more of a feeling of home and happiness. I always know what to always expect; family, friends, memories from when I was younger, collecting seashells at the beach, a slice of pizza from Mozzarella’s and my favorite boutique, Heartichoke in Northport. Even though I have so many similar surroundings and memories from New York every day I am there I see something unique or new I never have before. Riding the train into the city on a rainy day was my favorite thing to do, from the different scenery on the hour long trip to Penn Station to the colorful umbrellas bouncing everywhere in the city it was just another reminder of how diverse and unique New York and why I love being there so much.
