The Let Down?

My clock reads 11:45 p.m. I turn my head toward the tv and see the Royals vs. Giants highlights playing again on Sportscenter and I can’t help but feel like this is the end. Now before you call me a bad  fan, hear me out and look at why the Royals might be in over their heads for these next 1-2 games.

First, the Giants. My uncle who is a long time Giants fan sent me a text before game one reading, “It’s an even year, you better watch out.”

It seems like every two years the giants come out of nowhere end up making a world series run and no matter the opponent, they seam to win. They did it and 2010, 2012 and are one game away from doing it again in 2014. They are one of the most consistent teams in the league and when they want to be, the most deadly. They have the best pitching staff in the National League and have just enough hitting to power their way through the playoffs. The Royals looked in good shape against the Giants after pulling out game 3 and taking the series lead, but consistency prevailed in the next two and now we sit with a Giants 3-2 lead. Some might point to fact that the Royals are coming home and are a couple swings of the bats away from taking this thing back. This is true, but unlikely for 2 reasons.

The first being momentum. The Giants have out scored the royals 16-4 in the last 2 games…they dominated. After destroying a team twice, momentum really takes hold as the dominating team feels invincible and the teaming being dominated feels helpless and weak. You could see it in San Francisco that they knew the swing of momentum was occurring and they were taking full reins on this series.

The second reason being the Royals themselves. Now I am not a manager of a MLB team, but you don’t need to be to see how bad the Royals at bats have been the past two games. It got to a point today to where I was happy if they got the ball out of the infield.  Not only have the at bats been bad, the Royals defense has been mediocre in this series as well (minus Lo-Cain). Escobar let two slide under his glove and Dyson never looked fluid out there and might have cause some runs because of that. In order for the Royals to take charge again they need to play better, plain and simple. The Royals starting pitching has done fine during the series, the Royals bats just cant find many holes. If you watched the game today you would just see no matter how good of a pitch Shields threw, the Giants just stuck there bat out and found some holes. The Royals need to find a way to do the same.

All in all, this has been the most fun I have had in October in my entire life, and I love how this city has backed this team so strongly. I hope the Royals find their stride and paint this city blue for a while longer. With the consistent Giants coming into town with big head and puffed chests, the Royals have a tough task to tackle, but as the Journey song goes, ” Don’t Stop Believin”.
