“I Can’t Breathe”

From CNN to ESPN, in the past two weeks you can’t seem to get away these cop killing cases. The latest has been Eric Gardner. If you have not watched TV in the last 2 weeks, Eric Gardner was a man who surrendered to a cop, but the cop put the man in a chokehold. The man repeatedly stated during the arrest, “I can’t breathe.” Gardner was hospitalized and eventually died from the injuries in the hospital.

Now I’m not a big political junkie and not the most informed on the subject. In fact, I was mostly unaware of the case until yesterday. Big news in the sports world broke as basketball phenoms LeBron James, Kyrie Irving , and Deron Williams all displayed “I Can’t Breathe” shirts during their warm-ups before the game. After the Cleveland 110-88 victory, all focus seem to be displayed on the pre-game protest instead of the crushing Cavs victory.

As a sports fanatic, I understand their purpose for displaying the shirts and believe they succeed in their message, but it was exactly opposite of what I want to hear in sports news. So much of sports now is revolved around off-field or off-court antics, instead of game analysis and pure sports talk. I respect and support their protest, but I hate the outcome. I love rolling out of bed every morning and watching highlights for the short amount of time before I have to get ready for school. It’s my time of peace and relaxation. So when I wake up and end up watching CNN instead of SportsCenter, it ruins my morning and day. Again,I am in support of their standpoint and purpose. They are American citizens and have the right to protest, but next time if they could do it without ruining my morning, that would be great.
