Eagles Softball Captures Tournament Championship

This past weekend, the softball team took a trip to Columbia to play in the first annual War on the Battle Field tournament. The girls played their first three games on Friday and finished the day with a 3-0 record. Each game on Friday was won by at least seven points. In the first game ,junior Olivia Prather threw a no-hitter, and in the third game sophomore Destiny Ojigoh followed in her footsteps and also threw a no hitter.

“It was my first time pitching in a varsity game, and I came out and threw a no hitter. It was exciting, and it gives me high expectations for myself in the upcoming years,” Ojigoh said.

On Saturday, the Eagles came out early and won their first game easily. They played in the championship against the South Callaway Bulldogs late Saturday night. The game was a fight all the way through. In the 3rd inning sophomore Shea Prather led off the inning with a base hit. Following, freshman Grace Moore was hit by a pitch. One wild pitch and the Eagles were second and third with 1 out. Senior Shelby Prather proceeded with a hit up the middle to put the Eagles up 1-0.

“The pitching was really good in the championship game, we were fighting to get just one run. It felt really good to get a hit and start something for the team,” Sophomore Shea Prather said.

After scoring one run the team had to find a way to keep the Bulldogs from scoring. Olivia Prather pitched the first 5 innings without a ball put in play, she was up to 15 strikeouts. With a little help from the defense, Prather finished the game with 18 strikeouts and no hits.

“This weekend was a big success for the team and for myself. I think it was one of the best ways to start the season off. The championship game was a big pitching accomplishment for myself, I set the bar for how good I want to be all year, but also for how much I want to get better,” Olivia Prather said.

The Eagles start the year off with a championship title, and an undefeated record of 5-0. This is only the start for the team. The girls have big expectations, and hope to go far in the post season.
