The new head football coach, Coach Greg Jones, is the newest part of the Liberty North family. Graduating from Northwest Missouri State University in 1991, Jones has had a positive coaching career throughout many schools from around the northland.

Coach Jones has been the head football coach at Odessa (MO) High School, Van Buren (AR) High School, Park Hill (MO) High School, Park Hill South (MO) High School, and Kearney (MO) High School. But he is most known for leading the Kearney Bulldogs to the three state title games, winning two, over his eleven years coaching there. His overall record there was 119-23.

“Coach Jones at Kearney has had a record of success and hopefully we can now build on that success here at Liberty North,” junior Spencer Silvey said.

Coming into North with an overall coaching record of 173-53 and seven national titles in competitive weightlifting, Jones looks to help to improve athletics through many programs within the school. Weekly grade checks will be implemented, and tutoring will be provided for those who do not meet the standards.

“It is apparent that he knows what he is doing. He wants to make sure our grades come first. If your talent is good enough to play in the next level but you don’t have the grades, then you won’t be playing college ball, so he made it very clear that he will be making sure that school comes first,’ junior Finn Giddings said.

The Liberty North Eagle football team went 5-7 last season, as the Kearney Bulldogs who went 13-2 and lost in the state finals to Harrisonville. When the teams met in September, the Bulldogs won 30-0. The Eagles look to improve this rivalry with the new coach who has previously beat them in the match-up.

“Coach Jones seems ready to work and wants to put a great program into north. He wants to win while also have fun, and I personally look forward to playing for him. With his current reputation of winning, I look forward to the seasons ahead,” sophomore Trevor Rukstad said.
