Trap Shooting

Trap+Shooting

Our school offers great opportunities for students who want to participate in extracurricular activities, and the trap shooting is one of them. In this club, students load up their shotguns and shoot clay targets as they are launched through the air. Trap shooting has grown sharply in popularity this year, with the number of students participating steadily rising in recent years.

The team meets at the KCTA range in Smithville each Sunday and practices for their meets against other schools. The most recent of those was against Kearney, who they met in Smithville for a dual meet.

“Our season’s progress as a team has been hard to measure since it’s such an individual sport, but it’s a lot more about having fun than about competition,” Junior Molly Hedrick said.

The team does very well at competition, however. They barely lost to Kearney at the most recent meet, an impressive performance by the Liberty teams.

“Trap is combined between the two high schools, Liberty and North, which makes it really enjoyable. It’s a lot of fun to see people who you used to go to junior high with,” explained Hedrick.

It’s not all fun and games, however. There is a lot of practicing that goes on to make sure the shooters are up to par once the meets start rolling around.

“We practice all year long, so long as the weather permits. That’s a good thing because it’s really hard to get back into shooting after you stop for a while. I love it, and think anyone who’s remotely interested should try shooting trap,” said Hedrick.
