Key Club

Key Club

Of the many clubs Liberty North has to offer, many include volunteer opportunities. One notable club is Key Club, a club that anyone can join to volunteer and help out others, lead by guidance counselor Jill Brock.

“In Key Club, we basically volunteer anywhere.  We try to get people connected with the community and get the community involved in volunteering. We also want to give back to the community” senior Natalie Canuteson said.

Key Club has a large selection of volunteer opportunities for each meeting.  From babysitting to volunteering at a soup kitchen, the chance of getting volunteer hours  is never-ending.

“Our volunteer opportunities vary with the season.  For Christmas we donate to families in need and help out the Nature Sanctuary for their Halloween and Christmas workshops.  Generally we do highway cleanups, give donations, and raise awareness for the homeless, “ senior Tiffannie Mac Donald said.

The club’s most recent community service project is One Homeless Night. One Homeless Night is meant not just for Key Clubbers, but for students to get involved in as well.

“One Homeless Night’s purpose is to raise awareness of the homeless population in Liberty.  Hopefully we’ll get student volunteers to help the homeless people,” Canuteson said.

Students who participate in One Homeless Night will have to endure the discomfort of cold weather with nothing but a box and their warmest attire.

“On November 8, we’re going to sleep outside the school to see what it’s like to be homeless. It should be interesting,” Thone said.

Whether students are involved in volunteer opportunities for volunteer hours or for fun, these events as well as Key Club help develop character and empathy.

“What I think is most important about projects like One Homeless Night is the ability to empathize.  Even if students aren’t in Key Club, they can get involved and empathize for people like the homeless or who are in need,” Mac Donald said.
