“Yes, you guys still have to come to school”

“The government of the United States of America has shut down. A lot of kids are asking what it is, and what does it mean and how is it going to affect our country. Wondering especially if they have to come to school. “Yes, you guys are still coming to school,” government teacher David Mayne said.

The government is shut down; it has not shut down in seventeen years. The democrats and republicans cannot compromise on the budget. One of the big problems is Obama Care.

“Democrats wanted to fund Obama Care and the republicans did not want to, so after a couple days of this budget not being passed, they had to shut down. What happens now is nonessential government shuts down, and people get laid off,” senior Quinn Mars said.

“United Technology Cooperation said on Wednesday that it is preparing to furlough nearly two thousand workers at its Sikorsky units, which makes Black Hawk helicopters for the Defense Department” (The Wall Street Journal).

“The government shutdown really hurt my family because whenever it happened, my mom lost her job because the workers can’t take furlough, they have all refused to do that,” sophomore Peyton Perks said.

The government shutdown is also affecting the students in the classroom.

“The government shutdown has effected people in my class, some of the websites have been shut down. They’ve been trying to get pictures off the National Archives for an assignment in Honors American History” freshman Zach Klein said.

Many places are shut down, including Mount Rushmore, Old Faithful, Alcatraz, Grand Canyon, places in Alaska and Hawaii, many places in Washington DC, along with San Juan Historic Park in Puerto Rico.

“The federal government, not the state or local government is what is shut down. They are only focusing on nonessential operations. The US Military is still operating. The FBI and food inspectors for the food and drug administration still continues to go on. The essential parts for America are not going to shut down. Nonessential services, registering certain documents, new people getting into social security, people getting a gun permit, National Parks, National Monuments; all are closed right now and will be closed as long as the government stays shut down,” said Mayne.
