It was a different scene at Livestrong Sporting Park on Tuesday, October 16. It was not the normal sporting blue but instead the national colors of red, white, and blue.
The US soccer men’s national team, struggling with injuries came to LSP (Livestrong Sporting Park) in Kansas City for the first time ever to play Guatemala. With stars Landon Donovan and Brek Shea injured, this game was expected to be a very close game
The US needed a win to assure a spot in the final stage of the World Cup qualifier. The open practice on Sunday showed how determined they were to accomplish this feat. The team was welcomed by thousands of fans at LSP that came out to watch the team practice and get autographs.
With fans filling up the seats at LSP, on Tuesday, the atmosphere was becoming familiar for Sporting fans as it was becoming similar to a normal Sporting KC game. The cauldron was filled with American flags and the sight was simply breathtaking.
The atmosphere was rocking as the game began but it was quickly silenced as Guatemala struck first with a break away goal. Clint Dempsey and the US fought hard and took the lead right back though.
With a 3-1 lead at halftime the US defense continued to out play Guatemala and kept the score the same throughout the game. The US not only won, and qualified for the next stage, but they also realized that they have one of the best crowds right in the heart of America.
For the future, Sporting KC ownership hopes to get the US vs. Mexico game soon and the US hopes to make quite a run in the 2014 World Cup.
