There are so many great stadiums in Kansas City. There is the sea of red at Arrowhead, the outfield attractions at Kauffman, the amazing atmosphere at Livestrong, and the glass windows at the Sprint Center. However, one that is overlooked is the Independence Events Center.
The Independence Events Center is the home to two Kansas City professional sports teams. One is the Missouri Comets indoor soccer team.
The Comets have started off their 2012 season undefeated and are currently 3-0 putting them in first place. They are lead by former Kansas City Wizards players Will John and Craig Rocastle.
Professional indoor soccer in KC has been around for a very long time. Originally the Kansas City Comets played soccer at Kemper Arena from 1981-1991. When the MISL (Major Indoor Soccer League) folded, so did the team. The next season however, the Atlanta Attack of another league moved to Kansas City where they played from 1991-2001. The Comet’s league once again folded, but indoor soccer in KC continued.
In 2001, six teams created the second MISL and played from 2001- 2005. The Comets, themselves folded for the first time in 2005, followed by the league in 2008. This brings us to today’s team, named the Missouri Comets, which was created in 2010 with the third MISL.
The Independence Events Center is overlooked by sports fans, but it has no reason to be. Not only does the stadium have a great atmosphere, but it also has a winning team with lots of amazing soccer history.
