Students Get a Day Off of School

September 30, 2018

A day and a half off of school sounds good to just about everyone, but why it is that students get a day and a half off for professional development day a few times a year?

“[professional development is important so] The teachers can improve their instruction, collaborate with other teachers, and reflect on their skills,” chemistry teacher Jessica Robinson said.

Professional development days gives time for staff to better improve the school without making the teachers have to stay before or after school.

“We already have eight hour work days,” Robinson said.

For the most part, why students get a day off is known, yet questions might arise over why the day before is an early release.

“That’s also a part of professional development day so all the same reasons,”  Robinson said.

In spite of that, schools still have multiple days off throughout the year for the same recurring reason for professional development.

“Sometimes it’s the goal of the day, some days you meet with just your content team so like all biology teachers all meet together and other days we meet with the whole faculty to talk about things that impact our whole staff and school like the act,” Robinson said.

On the other hand, there are multiple ways Liberty North students think these days off school help improve our school.

“I think professional development day impacts our learning by giving us a day off of school, freshening our minds,” junior Mckenna Atherton said.

This day gives teachers a time to improve on their teaching without them having to go over their eight hour work days, resulting in students getting a day and a half off.

“I think we have professional development to get new ways of teaching students,” junior Sheily Covarrubias said.
