Yesterday, for the second time in the clubs’ histories, both Sporting KC and the Royals won on the same day by the same score: 1-0. Kansas City has seen its share of victories over the past two months from these two teams. As both are currently on tough road trips hopefully the success continues.
The Royals defeated the hottest team in Major League Baseball, who before last night were on a ten game winning streak. KC did this with phenomenal pitching from starter, Wade Davis, who pitched seven scoreless innings. He was then followed up by solid outings from Herrera and Holland to finish shutting out Atlanta.
Sporting however traveled to New York where they faced off against the star-studded talent on the Red Bulls. Just minutes into the match, a beautiful corner kick from Graham Zusi connected with the head of Aurelien Collin, who smashed the ball into the back of the net. From there on, sporting controlled the game and gave Jimmy Nielsen his fifth straight clean sheet and a 1-0 victory.
For both of these teams, they are on one of their most difficult road trips of the season. From Atlanta, the Royals travel to Boston to face off with the 10-4 Red Sox in a three game series. After that, KC will travel to Detroit to battle with the division rival Tigers, before returning home. KC will try to continue their success by returning home with a .500 road trip.
SKC, however, after already being in the northeast, will travel across the country for Saturday. They will play their second game in four days, against the former MLS Cup Champions, Los Angeles Galaxy. Going to LA, Sporting will try to extend their unbeaten streak to six and their winning streak to four.
With high hopes going into the season, both Sporting KC and the Royals have lived up to expectations. The Royals are currently in second place in the American League Central with an 8-6 record, a game back from Detroit. On the other side of the state line, Sporting currently sits at the top of the Eastern Conference. With the talent on these teams, Kansas City should see a lot of victories this summer.
