On Thursday, September 6, around eight-thirty, I sat down on my couch and saw that the MTV Video Music Awards was almost over. I realized that there was a taping of the live show that was on immediately after it, so I hit the record button and eagerly waited for it to come back on. After an episode of The Big Bang Theory, I went straight to the recordings and began my judging. Every year it is the same thing, a “comedian” for a host telling jokes that my grandmother could have written, there are always two performances that leave me with more questions than entertainment, and the acceptance speeches are always the same, the artist thanks their “loyal fans” for voting and MTV for having them, and of course there is always something twilight related. I was not surprised when One Direction took home three moon men (best new artist, best pop video, and most share-worthy video), or that Rihanna took home the award for best video of the year. I was pleasantly surprised to watch Green Day take the floor with their performance of their song “Let Yourself Go” and was touched by Frank Ocean’s performance of “Thinkin Bout You”. I cannot say that I was very impressed with Alicia Keys when she sang “Girl on Fire” or with Taylor Swift as she sang her newest song “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. But I have to say my absolute favorite part of the night was when Rebel Wilson and The Wanted announced the award for best female video. Wilson entertained the crowd with her funny antics, and paired with the five dashing members of The Wanted they stole the show. This year, however, was just like all the rest where a new artist takes home all the awards, and the crowd is entertained by quirky celebrities. Although it is the same every year, it doesn’t stop me from watching it.
