Liberty Bond Issue Fails

Liberty Bond Issue Fails

Liberty patrons voted against a 43-cent tax levy increase in order to make many changes throughout the school district.

“It was disappointing that the bond was not passed. Now we need to analyze why it didn’t pass to figure out what we need to do to improve it for the community. Hopefully through more research we can figure out as a district what we need to do to get the bond passed,” Liberty North High School Principal Dr. Jacobs said.

One of the potential causes of the bond not passing could have been the low voter turnout as only 15% of registered voters in the Liberty School District showed up to make their opinion matter.

“I was really not happy that the bond did not pass. Apparently penguins are more important than students. We need to be spending our money on education because it will help our youth become better citizens,” Junior Alyssa Aunspaugh said.

Many students did not agree and were shocked that the bond did not pass.

“I am kind of surprised, I thought the bond would pass. I wanted it to pass to help expand our school to help avoid overcrowding,” Sophomore Rachel Wigand said.

The school district as a whole must move on from the results of the election.

“Our next step is to finish the field house. If we are creative with the use of classrooms we should be able to handle the small growth. We have to figure out a way to add the last addition to the school. We are looking at revising the proposal in hopes of going forward in February in hopes of moving the freshmen up to the high schools by 2013 or by 2014,” Jacobs said.

There is one thing that people can agree on. Something must be done to accommodate the rapid growth of the Liberty school district, whether or not that is through renting more trailers to add more class space for schools or attempting to re propose the bond at a later time.
