International Skype Club

The International Skype Club which meets every Wednesday from 7:00pm-8:00pm, is a definite way to be opened up. Each North student is set up with a group of students from Taiwan.

The point of the club is to teach the students from Taiwan how to speak and write proper English; and to get to know the students at Taiwan and have the North students share some things about themselves. It is an interesting and good way to meet new people and enjoy a laid back Wednesday night.

“The most interesting thing about this club is that we are getting talking to kids in a culture that we are not familiar with at all. Students should join to learn what other cultures are like, and to see that other kids around the world are the same as us and enjoy the same type of things. Being in charge of this club is awesome, because of the kids, both North student and the students from Taiwan, kids that I enjoy being around extra time,” club sponsor Kimberly Martin said.

Every Wednesday evening the group meets at the school and talks to the kids from all of the way across the globe. The Taiwan students write essays that are printed off and checked by the North students. When everyone is signed on to Skype, calls are made and the chatting begins. The student’s papers are read aloud by the one that wrote it and then checked for grammar and spelling mistakes by a North student.

If there is time left over at the end, hanging out and talking to the kids is encouraged. One can learn that just because students are on the other side of the world, bonds can be made through one common interest.
