The anticipation for the 2014 World Cup is continuing to grow for soccer fans around the world. It being the best soccer tournament in the world means that only the best players get to compete in it. Out of those players, Sporting Kansas City has a chance to get five of them to play for the United States.
For head coach, Jurgen klinsmann’s January camp in Brazil, he chose to call up 26 athletes, most from MLS. Within those 26 athletes, Sporting Kansas City players, Matt Besler, Graham Zusi, Seth Sinovic, Chance Myers, and Benny Feilhaber all have the opportunity to prove to the coach himself that they deserve to stay in Brazil for this summer’s World Cup.
While all of the SKC players are comfortable with each other, some are most likely more comfortable at this camp than others. US national team regulars, Matt Besler and Graham Zusi are competing for a starting spot, but is nearly set in stone that the spot is theirs. Seth Sinovic and Chance Myers, on the other hand, have never been called up to this level before and they are simply trying to make the team.
The last scenario, Benny Feilhaber’s, is a little more unusual. Feilhaber was once a US national team regular, like Zusi and Besler. Feilhaber is the only one of the five to have ever been to or play in a World Cup. However after falling out from the team after the 2010 World Cup, Feilhaber has only played in 3 of the team’s last 58 games.
It seemed as if Benny’s chances at ever playing for the US again and his career, all together were coming to an end. That’s when Sporting Kansas City coach, Peter Vermes gave him a call and changed his career completely. After Feilhaber signed a contract with Sporting, he played on and off for the beginning of the season. It was a frustrating start, however, he eventually gained a starting spot and fought hard to keep it, which he did all the way through the playoffs. Feilhaber shined in the later parts of 2013 and it was enough to show Jurgen Klinsmann that he belonged in the January Camp.
Having three of Kansas City’s four defenders and two of their three midfielders competing for a national team spot at the World Cup truly is a tribute to how good Sporting is at the moment. After winning the MLS Cup this past season and the fact that all of these players will be coming back next year, MLS better watch out for this team in 2014.
