The Liberty Hills Country Club opened in 1967. The 140 acres was home to a full 18 hole golf course, clubhouse and swimming pool and offered members various amenities. But on Friday, January 6, the clubhouse was engulfed in flames and ultimately destroyed.
At approximately 5:30 pm on Friday evening, smoke was reported at the clubhouse and by 6:45 pm the building was fully inflamed.
A total of 39 firefighters from eight different departments were called to help in the efforts of putting out the flames, but strong winds and a broken fire hydrant made it increasingly difficult. In fact, several tanker trucks were used to collect water off-site to fight the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains unknown but is currently under investigation as a crime scene.
“I was really shocked to hear that it had burnt down. And I was pretty sad because we had golf practice down there last year, so I was relatively familiar with it. I really enjoyed going out there so I hope they can rebuild it,” senior Rachel Hain said.
