Environmental Club

Clubs at Liberty North High School are just starting up and one of the more emphasized club this year is Environmental Science Club. Headed by Mrs. Hubinger, a science teacher at Liberty North, the main goal of the club is to preserve and improve the environment around Liberty North High School and the Liberty community.

“We try to meet every week during Eagle Hour so that we can get momentum and ideas flowing about projects we can do. As the winter comes though, we have to slow down and pick back up in the spring,” Hubinger said.

The club does a lot of projects and activities to raise awareness about the environment.

“Our first big project was here at the Liberty North campus. The students and I planted a variety of native plants and flowers in front of Liberty North. It was fun to see the students interact with each other while helping the environment at the same time,” Hubinger said.

The choices about what gets planted are not random or exotic. Each plant has a meaning behind it.

“We had a student one time that was concerned about the monarch butterflies because they can only lay their eggs on certain plants, so we decided to plant Asclepias Tuberosa. Research is needed before we plant so that we know the reasoning as to how it helps the environment and also where we can find the native plant,” Hubinger said.

Being outdoors is obviously a big part of the club, and a love of nature is the main reason people join

“The Environmental Science club attracts people who are intrigued by science and the environment.  It is perfect for me because I love nature and being outdoors,” science teacher Gretchen Hubinger said.
