For the first time since 2010, Missouri football has started off the season with a 7-0 record. This was expected by absolutely no one especially since Mizzou is in the football super power conference, of the SEC.
Missouri’s first season in the SEC didn’t exactly turn out the way they wanted it to. The Tigers finished with a 5-7 record missing out on a bowl game for the first time in 8 years. The 2013 season was predicted to be pretty similar to the last. Most experts said that Missouri had a shot at 6-6 with James Franklin returning for his senior season at most.
Those experts and the whole world were shocked as Missouri just kept on rolling over their opponents week after week. After upsetting a banged up Georgia team, Mizzou followed with a victory against a highly ranked Florida squad for their 7th victory of the season. Now Mizzou has control of their own destiny, and with a win against South Carolina this Saturday, Missouri will definitely be seen as the favorite in the SEC East.
Mizzou has already done more than they were expected to, now the question is whether the Tigers can pull out another big victory and then win the games that they are supposed to win. If the Tigers can do that then they will definitely be in the discussions for the BCS Championship game
With Saturday’s game already being extremely important, it also has another big meaning to Mizzou alumni. Saturday will be the University of Missouri’s 102nd Homecoming. Homecoming at Mizzou is a huge deal because homecoming itself originated there 102 years ago. With a win, it would be the first time since 1960 that Mizzou started 8-0.
Saturday’s game is a gold out, two ranked teams will be battling for the win and positioning in the SEC East, and it’s homecoming. This Mizzou team has done more than everyone expected. Now we will find out on Saturday whether they can keep the streak going and tie a school record in the process.
