Last year the Royals got their chance to show off Kauffman Stadium to the whole world and host an all-star game. This summer, it’s Sporting KC’s turn to be in the spotlight.
On Wednesday, January 9th MLS Commissioner, Don Garber came to meet with Sporting Kansas City president, Robb Heineman about the possibility of Sporting Park hosting the 2013 MLS All-Star Game. A day later it went from a possibility to a set in stone fact. Sporting Kansas City and Sporting Park will host the 2013 MLS all-star game on July 31st.
Since the re-brand of the team in 2011, Sporting KC has established one of the best, if not the best fan base in all of MLS in one of the most technological advanced stadiums in the US. Not only that, but Kansas City has also had lots of success finishing in first place in the Eastern Conference each of the past two seasons.
As if Sporting fans weren’t excited enough with the upgrades to the lineup, this all-star game will make this the most anticipated soccer season in professional KC soccer history. Sporting KC sold out all but one of their games last season, often filling up the stadium completely with standing room only tickets and this year the tickets will be worth even more.
SKC games have become the place to be for sports fans throughout the Kansas City area. With the growing support for this team and organization, Sporting has truly become Kansas City’s team.
Kansas City and the Royals put on a show for the world to see last summer at Kauffman Stadium. Now Kansas City gets another chance to be in the spotlight, this time supporting their soccer club at Sporting Park. With the great fan base Sporting has, I have no doubt that the atmosphere on July 31st will be just as breath taking as it is every time Sporting steps onto the pitch at home.
