A Spook-tacular Game

I have said it once, and I will say it again, I hate Thursday night football games. Yesterday’s game, however, was not as horrible as I expected. Seeing how it was on Halloween, the student section and band were dressed in their costumes. Parents, instead of taking their children trick-or-treating or passing out candy took came to the game to cheer their team on in the first ever home district game.

We played St. Joseph Benton whose record was 0-9, so we were predicted to win. I however, was a bit more skeptical. When we arrived at the William Jewell at 4:30, it seemed like this would be like any game the boys had played before. The managers went into the bathroom, like always, and did our makeup; since it was Halloween we had face paint. Then we trudged up the big hill to the stadium.

My managers were unloading the equipment and I went into the box to talk to one of the coaches. He asked me what I thought the outcome of the game would be. I am a realistic person, so I told point blank that we should win, but the other team will fight hard and it will be a tough game for our players. He told me to have more faith in our players.

When the game started, it seemed that my prediction would come true. St. Joseph Benton came at our team and scored the first touchdown. We answer with a touchdown also, but it was back and forth throughout most of the first half. As the night went on and fans got louder my boys kicked their butts in gear in the last few minutes of the first half, and took the lead.

After an inspiring speech from coach, the team went back on the field and dominated in the second half. It was their best game this season; we were the comeback kids and won 49-14. Thank you to everyone who skipped the usual Halloween routine to come support us; our fans are a huge part in our football program.

This has been the only Thursday game I haven’t minded so much. From this win, we move on to the second round of districts, and our next game will be on Wednesday November 6, 2013. I will be there alongside my team, but I wonder if I will hate a Wednesday night game as much as a Thursday one.
