The Juniors Walk of Fear

“Three days left!” was the first thing I heard when I walked through the school’s doors this morning. I could not help but be a little bittersweet about hearing it, I smiled to myself through the envy of the seniors finishing school before me, but the thought of them leaving is a form of nerve-racking excitement. This makes big shoes to for us juniors to fill, and a lot of them.

Every year it’s the same process;  young pups come up into the high school and returning students fill previous spots that old seniors seemed to have perfected. Believe it or not, everyone knows a senior that they idolize. Whether they are the MVP of your favorite sport, team captain of the debate team, president of your club, secret crush you’ve had all year or just a friendly face that listens to you in class. For me, my senior idols and big shoes to fill are my Editor-in-Chiefs.

Months ago, I never would have imagined myself sitting in an Editor-in-Chief spot on the Eagles View. Just seeing my Editors work has an aura of overwhelming responsibility; how can I ever replace the people who made my years in newspaper successful? Like every other junior, I’m sure I can abide for the fact that it’s a scary thought having your successors leave. At first I didn’t feel much sadness about them leaving, but as Monday approaches, it seems more like Doomsday. I wish I could drain all their talents into myself or make them write a book on “how-to not fail.” I feel like that could be a best seller in high schools. But unfortunately that can’t happen.

The biggest thing I keep trying to tell myself and other juniors, is that these seniors were us. They were scared juniors once, they had seniors that left them behind but taught trusted them to for fill their spots. Our seniors survived and I that gives me a reason to believe we will as well. Senior year should be the one year of high school you feel like a true leader, and we need to remember that no matter how much those little sophomore’s irritate us now, they will be taking our spots when we leave. So wish your seniors luck, smile through the fear, and take a step.
