Many students think that listening to a teacher debate would be boring, but in this case, it actually wasn’t. David Mayne, a social studies and government teacher, set up a debate among teachers on Friday, March 15, where students could watch and ask the teachers questions.
“I set up this debate because it gives these kids a new way of looking at members of society including the staff of the school and see us as a real member of society. It also helps them to develop communication skills and allows them to engage with an adult in a different level than they normally would. It also teaches them a little bit about modern issues,” Mayne said.
During this debate, the students could ask the teachers about anything political. Some topics they debate were immigration, abortion, and teenage drinking/alcohol. The debate really allowed the students to ask questions that they normally wouldn’t ask in a normal classroom setting and it also allowed them to disagree with teachers.
This debate was also a good way for students to see teacher not just as teacher but as a person of society. It gave the students a chance to hear the teachers opinions and for the student to voice their own opinion. It was a really cool experience to see the students and teacher interact with each other in a this way. It was also interesting to hear all the different opinions because they talked about topics that usually wouldn’t be aloud in a normal classroom setting. What many students took away from this debate was that teachers do have opinions and that its good to have opinion on political things.
