Relish Magazine Visits North

People learn to cook in many ways. Sometimes a family member or a friend teaches it, sometimes it is learned in a cooking class, and for the students in Mrs. Jody Fowler’s class, it is learned through cooking with a world-class chef. On Thursday November 8, two chefs from Relish Magazine came to cook with Fowler’s 5th– 7th hours.

“I’m very excited to have this opportunity for my students,” Culinary Arts teacher Mrs. Fowler said.

Relish Magazine tours the country stopping in cities putting on cooking shows and cooking with students. Liberty was one of Relish Magazine’s first stops in their 2009 tour and called the Liberty Tribune this year to see if they could come back.

“It’s really interesting to learn how to cook different things with different ingredients,” Junior Justin Skinner said.

When the chefs came into the class, they split the class up into two teams for a competition. The competition was to see which team could make the best plate in thirty minutes. Although the chefs came up with the plate, they had the students be very involved.

“It’s intimidating at times but you definitely learn a lot and gain a lot from the experience”, junior Jake Snow said.

For students like Snow who want to pursue cooking as a career, this experience is extremely valuable and informative for the future. The Culinary Arts students were able to have an opportunity to work with professional chefs and they took advantage of it.
