Practicing School Safety

Early yesterday morning, February 28, while Liberty North student were safely heading to class, a small school in Chardon, Ohio was collapsing under mass chaos. A gunman had entered the small-town high school and fired shots in the cafeteria at approximately 7:40 a.m. The shooting was completely unexpected and a terrifying experience for the students and staff who attend the school.
Anything can happen at any given time, but it is important for schools to practice safety procedures and caution each day.

Last week Liberty North had a lock down drill, and although some students do not take the drill seriously, it is very important.
“I feel like our school does the best they can to ensure that we are safe. The lock and stay drill is pretty essential and it is good that we practice ways to stay safe,” senior Alannah Kenowith said.
There have been many schools throughout the United States that have experienced a crisis, such as a gunman entering their school. The majority of schools, including Liberty North, has an effective crisis plan that would be implemented if the situation arises.
“We have the lock and stay drill, which reminds students that the administrators and teachers are prepared for what could happen. The administration has monthly meetings with the Liberty Police department to remind and refresh the procedure. On top of it all, our building is very safe and secure with cameras and it is very easy to watch people and see where they are at all times,” administrator Bob Kernell said.
The city of Liberty is very lucky to have strong and cautious security to keep all of the students in the district safe from any kind of crisis that could occur.
“I feel very comfortable in our school and I thought the lock and stay drill was a successful exercise to prepare students for what will hopefully never happen at our school,” junior Robin Rittermeyer said.
