Thanksgiving means being thankful for what you have, and giving appreciation to those who deserve it. Students have been taught this since 2nd grade, but how often do they give thanks to the people who spend their time attending to their needs day after day?
“FCCLA has been selling turkey feathers all week for .25 during lunch. There will be turkeys on the wall so you can put the feather on the turkey with the teacher’s name you want to win. The teacher with the most feathers will be announced at the end of the week when they have the honor of wearing the Turkey Teacher attire,” FACS teacher Jody Fowler said.
Students may not think twice about how much their teachers give of themselves in order to teach them, but teachers deserve some recognition.
“I really like Turkey Teacher; it gives students an opportunity to recognize teachers that deserve it. Teachers aren’t usually recognized for what they do, but this way, students can come together to vote for the teacher who they think most deserves it,” sophomore Anna McElheny said.
Not only will the teacher be recognized across the school as the Turkey Teacher of the year, they also have a fabulous costume they will get to wear on Tuesday, September 22, the last day of school before Thanksgiving break.
“We are still perfectly exactly what they will be wearing. Some type of headdress with feathers, possibly wings, and a banner,” Fowler said.
It took some creative minds put together to come up with a way to incorporate the upcoming holiday with acknowledging teachers for their hard work. FCCLA meets twice a month to brainstorm fundraisers that apply to both teachers and students, in order to raise money for the school.
“We are always trying to think of new ways to raise money for our project and build school spirit. Montana Grizzle came up with this idea and everyone thought it sounded fun,” Fowler said.
Students have had fun purchasing the feathers all week, and seeing more and more feathers accumulate on the wall of turkeys across the lunchroom. Everyone is anxious to see who the winning turkey will be.
“Personally, I want Mrs. Plaster to win. She is always really involved with the school and activities. She deserves some recognition for everything she does. So do all of the teachers, so I’m fine with whomever wins,” McElheny said.
