From Happy and Fortunate to Cold and Homeless

From Happy and Fortunate to Cold and Homeless

With the luxury of a warm home, food to eat, and a comfy bed to rest in at night, switching from fortunate to homeless wouldn’t be an easy change. As many people cannot say they have successfully switched over, some can say they have. On Thursday, November 8, Liberty North’s Key Club decided to attempt the switch over to homelessness by hosting “One Homeless Night”, for all students to attend.

“I think One Homeless Night was something to learn from for kids who are fortunate and they get to experience what it is actually like to be homeless,” sophomore Olivia Brown said.

Not only is One Homeless Night a way to experience the homeless lifestyle, but also showed the students who participated what the hardships and obstacles are that homeless people go through on a daily basis.

“It was pretty cold, and I was not near as prepared as I thought I was going to be. It was tough seeing what homeless people have to deal with. We have no idea what it is like to be homeless, because we are fortunate enough to have a good home, and not have to sleep in a box, out in the weather”, senior David Roelofsz said.

Not only were students not prepared for the cold weather, but also had to make a few adjustments to get the most realistic experience as possible.

“I had to bring a lot of clothes because it was freezing, and it was interesting to see how bad being homeless really is. I’m not used to bringing a ton of layers just to go to sleep in so that was different, and they took our phones away, and we couldn’t use them, which was a big change, too,” junior Ben Whalen said.

Through out the experience, many students realized that being homeless did not mean just not having a home, and that the things they have should not be taken for granted. No technology, no food, no water, and no money are also some aspects of homelessness. Next time you don’t feel fortunate enough, and think your life is tough, just know that someone always has it worse, no matter the situation.
