Weekend of the Upset

This past weekend has college football fans shocked, confused, and quite frankly has many questioning the system itself. In 1973 Division 1 football was split into two more specific divisions. Renamed in 2006 to, Football Bowl Series (FBS), and Football Championship Series (FCS), for the past three decades the FBS has dominated the FCS. This weekend is starting to show a different trend. In the first weekend, eight FBS teams fell to the forethought inferior FCS.

K-State: 21                                         North Dakota State: 24

Connecticut: 18                                 Towson: 33

South Florida: 21                              McNeese State: 53

Iowa State: 20                                   Northern Iowa: 28

San Diego State: 19                           Eastern Illinois: 40

Georgia State: 22                               Samford: 31

South Alabama: 21                           Southern Utah: 22

Oregon State: 46                               Eastern Washington: 49

There is absolutely no doubt, that as a whole the FCS division of the NCAA is subordinate to the FBS division. However, many are questioning how much. Is the talent gap between the two divisions closing? Was this record-breaking weekend nothing more than a fluke? Only time will tell. If FCS teams continue to dispel the long held belief that FCS teams shouldn’t even be on the same field as FBS teams, then people will definitely have to start questioning the hard drawn lines between the two divisions.
