The varsity football team had a great start to the football season with huge wins in their first three games. But then came a real test when they battled Staley on Friday night. The varsity team wasn’t expected to win. Staley was a huge favorite and is one of the best teams if not the best team in the state. The eagles were a huge underdog going in and it showed throughout the game.
Staley was led by their star running back Morgan Steward. The Eagles defense couldn’t seem to stop Steward who on many plays it took two or three eagles to bring him down. Steward had a total of four touchdowns and 168 yards.
“Steward was hard to tackle. He was big and very fast. He has the potential to go play football in college somewhere,” senior defensive lineman Jordan Horn said.
There was a bright spot though. Antwynn Beavers had another solid performance with 164 yards and a touchdown. The Staley defense however held the eagles to only six points, a season low.
The key thing to remember is that Staley is a class higher and is a contender for state. The eagles play against Grandview this week and it will be a great opportunity to prove that the football team will just keep on fighting.
