Eagles Come out Swinging

Eagles Come out Swinging

Being ranked No. 10 in the state by the preseason polls brings a lot of pressure for the baseball team to start with.  Through the first five games the Eagles have risen to the challenge and proven why they deserve that ranking.  In an impressive outing, the Eagles swept their opening day doubleheader on Friday, March 21.  Liberty North first faced off with Truman and won the game 7-0.  Senior Andrew Vogelbaugh went through the first five innings with no problems and earned the Eagles their first win of the season.  This set the perfect stage for their second game against state ranked Lee’s Summit West.  In a tough game the Eagles came away with the win 8-5.  Senior Tyler Funk led the way on the mound and picked up another win for Liberty North.

The following day brought another doubleheader for the team at Fort Osage.  The team unloaded from the bus and walked onto the field to compete against the No. 1 ranked team in the state, Blue Springs South.  With a great start on the mound from senior Connor Simpson the Eagles were in a great spot for their third straight win.  Unfortunately the game took a turn for the worse and Liberty North suffered its first loss 11-4.  With a tough loss, the team regrouped and were ready for the game right after against Fort Osage.  Coming out with a hot start against the Indians, the Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.  With a spectacular performance by senior Luke Small on the mound, they were able to hold off the reigning District Champions and grab their third win of the season with the final score being 4-2.

Six days later on Friday, March 28, the Eagles took the field again against North Kansas City.  With a dominating performance the team earned their fourth win with the final score being 16-2.  Senior Tyler Funk lead the team on the mound and picked up his second win on the year.  Andrew Vogelbaugh also made a mark on the season as he blasted the Eagles first home run of the year.  Coming out strong in their first five games, the team is ready to move on to week two of the season and grab some more wins.  Led by 10 seniors on the team, this is the season everyone has been anticipating for a solid run at the state championship.  Based on their start, it’s nothing they can’t do.
