The North cheer teams head coach Kelsey Mayabb is now on her second year of coaching. Having the experience and managing the time to help the team progress can be a lot, so having a coach with the right mindset can be a key factor to being successful.
“Before coming to north I was a teacher and I coached in the North Kansas City School District for 12 years. I started cheering when I was a freshman in high school, and grew up doing gymnastics and diving,” Mayabb said.
The cheer community can make the sport fun to do but also fun to coach. Making a team that uplifts each other and gets along well as a team is important for the performance of the team and the people on it. Becoming a cheerleader can take a lot of effort and skill, so having the coaches to cheer you on and help you reach your goals can play a huge role in the outcome of the team at competitions.
“My dad has always been a coach and growing up, I watched the immense amount of joy it brought to his life and I wanted to experience the same thing. Watching others excel and exceed expectations has brought me more joy than when I was an athlete,” Mayabb said.
Being a coach can involve time and passion for the sport. Having familiarity, communication, and commitment can really help everyone get better quickly, but also help the coach make better decisions in the future.
“I love being able to cheer on others and enhance the spirit and culture of the community. I’m so excited for this new season and to see just how well our team can really be,” Mayabb said.
