Did That All Happen In One Night?

The home double header against William Chrisman was more than two varsity games.

Did That All Happen In One Night?

On Friday, January 29, Liberty North boy’s and girl’s basketball took on William Chrisman. The varsity women lost 39-55 and the varsity boys won 58-36. However this night was hardly just a double header. Coaches vs Cancer took place, Coach McCabe was recognized for his 100th win, Michael Hughes celebrated his 1000th career point, and Pat Tritsch was recognized for the video work he does for Liberty North Athletics.

“The night was all about raising money for cancer. Yes, there was a basketball game going on but the main focus was fighting cancer. North Nation ended up raising $1,452.24 for the American Cancer Society which is incredible,” senior Chandra Bolin said.

This amount of money topped the raised money from last year, and all proceeds from the evening’s activities were donated to the American Cancer Society through Coaches vs. Cancer.

“The money went towards the American Cancer Society, and it was for a great cause to help research cancer and help patients and their family affected by cancer,” junior Brady Kauffman said.

Head coach of the varsity boy’s team Chris McCabe was recognized prior to tip off for his 100th win, which occurred 100th January 15 at the Denver Miller basketball tournament hosted by Kirkwood High School.

“We were also able to recognize Coach McCabe for his 100th win by giving him the game ball at center court, with the help of Pat Tritsch who helped make a recognition video,” senior Kody Simon said.

Later in the game Pat Tritsch was then unexpectedly recognized for the video work that he does for Liberty North.

“It was cool being able to recognize Pat because he does so much for our athletics. He creates our introduction videos for the video board to make the experience at basketball and volleyball events (or anything other field-house athletic event) absolutely breathtaking. His videos give fans the game experience that people don’t get to experience within a high school across the nation. He is a huge blessing to Liberty North Sports Marketing, the fans, and the athletes,” Kauffman said.

Lastly, senior Michael Hughes made his 1000th career point. Going into the game he needed 15 points to hit 1000, and he did just that, and now is part of 1000+ point club. The point came on a free throw late in the game.

“After Mike made his 1,000 point the crowd went crazy. The students were ecstatic. At that moment nobody cared about the score; it was a celebration for Mike accomplishing a huge thing,” Bolin said.

The next girl’s varsity game is Monday, February 1 at Oak Park, and the boy’s varsity plays at Oak Park on Tuesday, February 2.
