Competing for a Common Cause

Competing for a Common Cause

In a rare occurrence cross town conference rivals decided to bury the hatchet for one night in order to work together to raise money for a great cause. Friday January 25, the Boys basketball team hosted their 2nd annual Coaches vs Cancer game.

This game had a different atmosphere in the beginning as both teams donned the same warm up shirts that featured the phrase “I am playing for,” where players from both teams were able to honor a person in their life who had or was currently battling cancer.

“It was really cool to be able to wear the shirts in honor of someone. It was really eye opening how much impact this disease has had on all of our lives,” Senior Zach Starr said.

Not only were teams able to honor the memory of someone through wearing the t shirts, but  starters for both teams walked out with an individual who had battled cancer or was representing someone who had cancer.

“It was a great opportunity to walk out with someone who was battling cancer. It was great to see the crowd giving them such a big ovation, that was a very cool experience,” Senior Kyle Malone said.

After the pregame festivities ended, a basketball game was to be played that night. North came out strong and never looked back and ended up getting the win. But in the end, both Kearney and North came away with a victory of their own as together they were able to raise over $1800 cvcresizedfor the American Cancer Society.
