Five, Six, Seven, Eight! Four words that, for this Senior, are all too familiar. Because, for her, these counts are an integral part of her sport.

“I’m interested in Color Guard and Winter Guard,” Senior Brooklynn Seely said.

Every passion has a start, it’s just a matter of when. In this case, Seely’s interest in guard started in middle school.

“I learned about this in 8th grade,” Seely said.

While some people develop interests from more outside resources, Seely’s beginning comes from somewhere a bit more familiar.

“My cousin spinned on one of the best teams in the states. It looked really cool and elegant and I wanted to try it,” Seely said.

But not everyone knows about this sport, let alone what it consists of.

“Basically color guard is a mix of dance but you include the spinning of multiple items of equipment including flag, rifle, and sabre,” Seely said.

This activity that Seely so dedicatedly participates in takes practice, taking up good portions of her time.

“I typically try to practice around 4-5 times a day or whenever I find free time to do it,” Seely said.

Not only has this sport affected her time, it has affected who Seely spends that time with.

“I got to meet my best friends Shelby and Sarah through winter guard and we’ve grown into a family. I can fall back on them for anything,” Seely said.

With every practice and competition, the affects all of this has on Seely comes through the team itself.

“My team is a huge part of my life. I really enjoy spinning and spending time with them. It’s a special kind of bond when you are on a team and see each other at your best and sometimes worst moments. Celebrating each other’s accomplishments makes all of the tears and bruises worth it,” Seely said.
