Video Games: Bringing us Together

August 30, 2018

With the press of a few buttons anyone is instantly able to enter a world where people see someone not as a face, but as a personality. A place where someone may be able to make friends from Australia to Iceland, video games offer near instant access to worlds that connect all kinds of people together.

“I think video games are a great way to meet friends, and I think it could be that they’re something anyone could enjoy, and there’s something for everyone. It doesn’t matter what you look like, since no one can see you. You can make friends solely off of who you are and I think that’s great,” sophomore Johnathan Skinner said.

Even if players don’t interact with people online through video games, they can still find new friends in school or around where someone lives by sharing a common interest.

“I haven’t made many friends in other places, since I don’t play many online games, but I have made friends through talking about games, finding a common interest led us to a friendship we still have today,” Skinner said.

While some types of games may actively put players against other players, there are also types of games that rely on teamwork and helping each other. These types of games offer a calmer atmosphere where you can just relax as you play.

“Cooperative games are probably the best when it comes to bringing others together. Everyone works together and there’s not a rush to be better than everyone else, so people take time to make friends most of the time,” Skinner said.

Video games can leave lasting impressions on anyone, weather it is just a fun moment with others or a heart stopping moment of adrenaline pumping suspense.

“A funny and memorable moment I had was when I was playing Overwatch with my sisters, we were in a group, and while we were waiting to find a game, we stood on top of each other, and everyone else in the game joined in and we basically made a tower of characters whilst talking to the others as it happened,” Skinner said.
