Moving Mental Mountains

If I’ve learned anything in all my years of playing softball, it’s that an emotional rollercoaster is an inevitable reality for every single one of us. The ability to take control of emotions is the most important skill a player can develop. You will strike out with the bases loaded. You will make an error that changes the game. You will fail repeatedly, because that’s what softball is. Physical errors happen to everyone, and they happen often. What often goes unnoticed is the mental battle every player has to fight, especially after an injury. Feelings of weakness and doubt make every attempt to destroy you from the inside out, and some players allow it to tear them apart. The greatest players, however, see this as yet another challenge to overcome. My recent transition to a new team has introduced me to one of the most determined and mentally sound people I know. Surgeries, physical therapy, and months of frustration and sitting have not left a dent in her. Doubt has not dragged her down. Despite the challenge she faces every day, her heart remains full. This alone proves to me that she cannot be touched by the physical obstacles that go with it. It’s incredibly uplifting to see her fighting spirit and love for the game, and the day she steps back onto the field, she will be stronger than she ever was before. I find myself benefitting from her presence throughout my rehab, and I truly believe people are brought into our lives at the right time. The walking boot and physical therapy only helped me to an extent. Being around someone with the same obstacles and goals as myself has truly been eye opening. Never overlook the struggles of those surrounding you, because you could find exactly what you need in them. Blessings come in the form of people more often than we think.
