New Advancements in Math Education

Math teachers at Liberty North may have found a better way to teach students.

“Math PLP is a flexible pace mastery learning program PLP stands for Personalized Learning Plan it lets students move at a flexible pace so that they can master concepts in algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2,” Math PLP teacher Maddie Backes said.

PLP is a new way to help students learn the basic fundamentals of mathematics.

“About 5 or 6 years ago district sent us to a professional development place. Some presenters talked about personalized learning for students, allowing students to move at their own pace and also have more ownership in their learning. We thought it sounded like a great idea and we found technology pieces that would make that possible so we implemented it so that students can have another option for working through the three main math courses in high school,” Math PLP teacher Sara Langford said.

While math PLP is a great option for students, some students may choose a more traditional way of learning.

“It really depends on the person some people perform better in PLP because it suits their learning style they like the delivery method watching the videos taking notes and then talking to the teacher for the check in with the teacher talk, some people really work better with a whole class direct instruction approach that’s why at the beginning of the year we always talk to students about if the class they are in PLP or tradition is a good fit for them,” Langford said.

Learning math really depends on the person who is teaching is not just on the person who is taking in the information.

“In a regular math class you have set date for assignments and test you move on while in PLP you have multiple times to get through a unit and you can’t move on until you get a good score on your test,” senior Wyatt Eickmann said.
