Track or Treat

Track+or+Treat

On October 31 a new tradition fell upon the William Jewell track when dozens of little monsters ran out onto the field in search of candy. These“Monsters” were the little brothers and sisters of football players and cheerleaders who dressed up in the Halloween spirit to fill the stands at the Liberty North district football game.

The Navy, or Liberty North’s  student pep club, came up with the idea to have the children go trick or treating around the track during half time.

“We really wanted to try to get the community to attend the game. We didn’t want the siblings of the football players and cheerleaders to miss out on Halloween because of the game. The Navy thought it would be a good idea to organize a youth trick or treat during half time,” Navy coordinator and athletic secretary Heather Callura said.

While Halloween masks and face paint covered up the children’s chilly noses, they were determined to get the candy.

“The trick or treating around the track was really cool because it gave kids the opportunity to come onto the field and support the school, all while being rewarded with candy. A lot of kids showed up, even with the cold weather and being a holiday; and all the costumes were really cute and creative,” senior Rachel Wigand said.

The game was a win-win for both ends of the stadium, the football players won the district game, and the Navy won the pride of seeing happiness in children’s faces.

“Our North football games are community events and we love the support. So if we can do something to involve our youth at our games we will do it because we hope to create family traditions to attend the games in the years to come,” Callura said.
