Scholar Bowl

There is many available clubs to participate in here at Liberty North, but some of those are more than just clubs. Scholar Bowl is an academic competition team that competes against other Scholar Bowl within the area.

“Scholar Bowl is a MSHSAA sponsored activity, we compete against other schools at the JV and Varsity level. The purpose is to stimulate an intellectual competition against other schools,” Scholar Bowl coach Ms. Coogan said.

Scholar Bowl competitions can be just JV, just Varsity, or both. There are four people on a team working together to answer trivia questions from categories such as academics, fine arts, music and movies, and other miscellaneous things. Because it is a school sponsored activity, Scholar Bowl has a budget to travel and compete, but just like any other activity they have to do some fundraising. Ms. Coogan and Ms. Camp coach sponsor and coach Scholar Bowl together. Ms. Camp has coached for many years, and has lots of experience with the activity.

“We recently had Trivia & Treats night, which is a trivia night open to people within the community. Groups can enter as teams, we ask trivia questions, and then we reward the winning teams with prizes,” Coogan said.

Many students compete at various tournaments throughout the year. The benefits they gain are far more than just intellectual.

“Competitions are all day and you compete in lots of different rounds. I really like it because you get to meet new people from other schools, senior Wes Speer said.

Scholar Bowl is a way for academically advanced students to engage in competitions against other high school Scholar Bowl teams. Students gain worldly knowledge on a range of various topics, as well as get an opportunity to meet several students from this area.
