Northland CAPS

Northland CAPS is a program offered by schools in the Northland that provides the opportunity for juniors and seniors to get hands-on, real-world experience outside of the standard high school classroom in the field they plan on going into. Through practice simulations and internships students are able to learn from professionals and build relationships with future colleagues. Not only do students acquire valuable skills needed for their specific field, but they are allowed the chance to truly see themselves in their future career.

“This program allows me to find out what field of engineering I’d like to be in to see if engineering is indeed the field I want to pursue. It also gives me the chance to work with real life situations and companies. I get to learn farther ahead of how I learn in school” junior JC Schuenemann said.

Northland CAPS is a great way for students to decide what they want to do in life and gives them the opportunity to take advantage of internships and being able to decide what they want to study.

“I’ve been able to narrow down what I want to do with my life at first I thought I might want to be an anesthesiologist or a veterinarian, but [Northland CAPS] helps you finally figure out what you really want to do. I’m looking towards a family care physician with a fellowship in sports medicine” junior Tyler Lamport said.

Participating in Northland CAPS gives students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and learn skills they wouldn’t learn in high school classes. Students are allowed the chance at a “trial run” with their future career and get a more solid idea about what they want to do with their life.

“I would definitely recommend Northland CAPS to other students. We have four strands currently, including Engineering, Medicine and Healthcare, Technology, Business and Entrepreneurship, and another new strand will be added next year that is Global Transportation. I think it’s a great way to get involved and learn outside of school” Schuenemann said.
